Online Education Expenses & Payment Methods

A South Dakota education online doesn't come without its expenses. Being prepared for these expenses and knowing the various ways available to help you pay for them is one of the first steps to attending a school online. In order to avoid any financial surprises in your education, you should conduct your research through the school's Financial Aid office before your first classes begin.

Required Expenses for Online Education

Tuition is going to be the most important, up front and largest expense when it comes to pursuing your South Dakota education online. Costs for tuition can vary significantly from school to school, depending on your degree program, your level of education (associate, bachelors, masters, or doctorate), and whether or not you have any transferrable credits to shorten your term in school. Tuition is usually expressed as a yearly amount but payable fifty percent at a time at the beginning of each semester of schooling.

Books are the other required expense for an online education. For study online, your books can either be traditional, real books that you will likely order from your school's online bookstore or you can choose to purchase them through a large, online retailer such as Amazon or Barnes & Noble. They may also be electronic books or PDF files. Many online classes do not use books at all, and instead rely on presentations or digital handouts from the instructor to impart all of the information that is needed to succeed in the class.

Other Expenses

Your online education can be handled without the following items, but they are recommended to smooth and expedite your learning experience.

  • A computer: You will need to use a computer in order to perform most of what you will do in an online education. Though you can use the computer of a friend or family member or even your local library, it is strongly recommended that you possess a desktop or laptop computer of your own.
  • An Internet connection:You will also need to have an Internet connection to complete your online education successfully. Like the computer, this can be provided by visiting friends, family or a local library usually, but it is highly recommended that you purchase and maintain your own high-speed Internet connection to your home and your own computer.
  • Productivity Software: Again, though it is not required, many of your professors will want information submitted to them using certain productivity software such as Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint. There are free, comparable versions of these software suites available online (such as OpenOffice.org).

Assistance Paying for Your Online Education

You can apply for federal financial aid to help pay for your South Dakota education online if your school has been properly accredited. In addition, there are scholarships you can apply for that will help you pay for school and do not have to be repaid. There is also the option of applying for personal educational loans which will have deferred payments until after you graduate, leave school, or stop attending classes at least part-time. Your Financial Aid office and advisors will have all of the information you need to find and/or apply for any of these methods of assistance.
